PressNGR reports that former Kano State Deputy Governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 general election, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has officially resigned from the ruling party.
Gawuna’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated March 29, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, the former deputy governor stated that his decision to leave the party was made on a personal and voluntary basis, bringing an end to his long-standing association with the APC.
“I hereby formally resign my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective March 29, 2026,” the letter partly read.
He also expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities and political platform it provided him during his years of membership.
Gawuna remains one of the most recognizable political figures in Kano politics, having served as Deputy Governor of Kano State and later emerging as the APC flag bearer in the highly contested 2023 governorship election.
His exit from the APC is already being viewed as a major political development in Kano State, especially as political alignments and re-alignments continue to gather momentum ahead of future electoral contests.
Although Gawuna did not reveal his next political destination in the resignation letter, his move has fueled intense speculation within political circles in Kano and beyond.
Sources familiar with the development told PressNGR that Gawuna is expected to meet with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday night at the latter’s Miller Road residence in Kano.
The anticipated meeting has further heightened talks of a possible political realignment, particularly given Kwankwaso’s enduring influence in Kano politics and his continued role as a key power broker in the state.
Should the meeting hold and result in a new alliance, it could significantly reshape the political landscape in Kano, where competition among major blocs remains intense.
Gawuna’s resignation adds to the growing list of political movements being witnessed across the country as politicians begin to reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In Kano, a state widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic battlegrounds, any movement involving a figure of Gawuna’s stature is likely to attract widespread attention and potentially alter existing party calculations.
For now, political observers will be watching closely to see whether the former deputy governor’s next move signals the beginning of a broader shake-up within Kano’s power structure.
