Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expanded his administration’s Hope for Digital Education initiative with the distribution of smart digital learning devices and core textbooks to public secondary school students across the state.
The development further strengthens Lagos State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading hubs for digital and technology-driven education.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Elias Olawale, the initiative is part of the third pillar of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda, which places strong emphasis on Education and Technology as critical tools for building a modern, knowledge-driven economy.
The statement noted that the programme also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s National Hope Agenda, which focuses on human capital development and improved educational standards across the country.
Speaking on the expansion of the initiative, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the programme is designed to open up opportunities for students and prepare them for future success.
“We are enabling access, opportunity, and a future where every child can learn, grow, and succeed,” the governor said.
He added that the government’s strategy of combining digital tools with essential learning materials would continue to strengthen Lagos State’s position as a model for educational excellence in Nigeria.
The initiative is being implemented under the supervision of the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, who said the programme has now evolved from a temporary response during the COVID-19 period into a broader and more structured statewide education reform.
According to him, the goal is to merge digital innovation with foundational literacy to ensure that students in Lagos are fully equipped to compete and excel in the 21st century.
The newly distributed Hope Digital Learning Tablets are equipped with Liv.ing data-enabled SIM cards and powered by the Roducate learning platform. The devices provide students with access to curriculum-based lessons, educational videos, mock examination materials, and life skills content.
To support the digital tools, students are also receiving simplified core textbooks, creating a blended learning system that ensures continuous access to quality education both inside and outside the classroom.
Officials said the programme is already making a measurable impact. Lagos public secondary school students reportedly recorded an 80 per cent pass rate in WAEC in 2021, with expectations of even better results as the initiative reaches more learners.
With over 600,000 students expected to benefit, the programme is also designed to encourage inclusive education while rewarding outstanding performance among students, teachers, and parents through performance-based incentives.
The Lagos State Government says the combined use of digital learning devices and accessible educational materials is part of its broader commitment to improving teaching and learning outcomes in public schools.
As the programme expands, Lagos continues to position itself as a benchmark for educational innovation and excellence in Nigeria.
