NBTE Staff Protest Alleged Tenure Extension for Bugaje, Raise Fraud and Due Process Concerns

By PressNGR
Fresh controversy has engulfed the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) following allegations that its Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, was granted a controversial tenure extension by the Minister of Education despite mounting concerns over due process and past allegations of misconduct.
Sources within the agency told PressNGR that the decision has sparked outrage among staff members, many of whom believe the move was executed through what they described as a “backdoor arrangement” rather than in line with established public service procedures.
The development has reportedly deepened tensions within the agency, with employees warning that the continued uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the board could undermine the institution’s credibility and disrupt its core mandate.
Questions Over Past Records
The controversy has been further fueled by allegations that key aspects of Prof. Bugaje’s professional history may have been ignored in the process leading to the reported extension.
According to insiders, a federal government white paper allegedly documented his removal from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto in the late 1980s. Sources also pointed to his alleged removal from a previous rector position following findings of financial misconduct by investigative panels.
Although these claims have not been independently verified by PressNGR, concerned observers insist that any decision involving the continued leadership of a federal education agency should be guided by transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to due process.
Allegations of Political Influence
Staff members and other insiders have also raised concerns over what they described as possible political interference in the matter.
There are claims that pressure from influential political figures may have played a role in the minister’s recommendation, with fingers reportedly pointed at a presidential aide and a governor from Nigeria’s North-East region.
While no official confirmation has been provided regarding such influence, the allegations have added another layer of concern to an already sensitive issue.
Why NBTE Matters
The National Board for Technical Education remains one of Nigeria’s most important education regulatory bodies, overseeing the standards and accreditation of polytechnics, monotechnics, and technical colleges across the country.
As the institution responsible for shaping technical and vocational education, stakeholders say instability at the top could have significant consequences for policy implementation, quality assurance, and institutional oversight.
Amid the growing controversy, many staff members are now calling for the immediate appointment of a new Executive Secretary, arguing that only fresh leadership can restore confidence and reposition the agency.
One employee, who spoke anonymously, said the board urgently needs competent leadership to reverse what workers described as a period of internal decline.
“We are appealing to the minister to act urgently. The Board cannot continue on this path. We need competent leadership to undo the damage that has been done,” the source said.
Presidency Yet to React
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued any official statement on the matter, leaving many questions unanswered.
For many observers, the unfolding developments at the National Board for Technical Education reflect wider concerns about governance, institutional integrity, and the need for transparency in appointments and tenure decisions across Nigeria’s public institutions.
With pressure mounting, attention is now focused on whether the Federal Government will address the controversy and take steps to restore confidence in one of the country’s key education agencies.
