BREAKING: Panic in Ado-Ekiti as Gunmen Invade EKSU Students’ Hostels

There was widespread panic late Monday night in Ado-Ekiti after suspected gunmen reportedly invaded off-campus hostels occupied by students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), forcing many residents to flee in fear.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the student residential area around the university community armed with weapons, moving from one hostel to another while dispossessing students of valuables including mobile phones, laptops, and cash.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the Phase 2 axis of the EKSU environment, has triggered renewed concerns over the worsening security situation around student hostels in the state capital.
Students Raise Alarm Over Midnight Attack
A student of the institution, identified on X (formerly Twitter) as @yapperaholicc, raised the alarm in the early hours of Tuesday, describing the situation as terrifying and recurring.
In the post made around 3:01 a.m., the student wrote:
“Armed men are attacking students in their hostels in EKSU at midnight!!!!!”
The student further lamented that the attack came at a particularly difficult time for students who are currently preparing for examinations.
“We are supposed to be reading for our exams!!!!!”
The student also alleged that such attacks have become frequent in the area, claiming that the criminal activities had persisted for several days.
“It has been going on for three days now!!! They are also robbing us. Please help us repost…”
The social media outcry has since drawn widespread reactions, with many calling for immediate intervention from both the university management and security agencies.
Police Confirm Incident, Arrest Suspect
Reacting to the development, the Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident and disclosed that one suspect had already been arrested in connection with the attack.
Speaking on the matter, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said the suspect is currently in police custody and undergoing investigation.
According to him:
“A suspect has been arrested in connection to the incident and he is currently undergoing investigation, while necessary measures have been put in place to forestall reoccurrence.”
The police, however, did not immediately provide details regarding the number of victims affected or the exact value of items stolen during the operation.
No Deaths Reported, But Fear Grips Students
As of the time of filing this report, no fatalities had been officially confirmed. However, the attack has left many students shaken, with some reportedly spending the night in fear and uncertainty.
The development has once again exposed the vulnerability of students living in off-campus hostels, where security is often considered weak and inadequate.
Growing Insecurity Around Campuses
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity around tertiary institutions across Nigeria, especially in communities where students reside outside school premises.
In recent years, students in several parts of the country have repeatedly complained about rising incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping, harassment, and violent attacks, often blaming poor surveillance, inadequate policing, and weak security structures around campuses.
For many students, the situation has become more troubling as criminal activities increasingly disrupt academic life and create a climate of fear.
Students Demand Urgent Government Action
Following the attack, students of EKSU have called on the Ekiti State Government, the university management, and security agencies to take urgent steps to protect lives and property around the institution.
