Tennessee death row inmate, Christa Pike, has reportedly regained consciousness days after surviving a botched execution that left her hospitalised and on life support.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed last Wednesday at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. However, she survived two attempts to administer the lethal injections.

Following the failed execution, Pike was rushed to hospital and placed on a ventilator.

Her lawyers disclosed at a press conference outside court on Wednesday that doctors initially believed she had suffered severe brain damage and appeared to be brain dead.

According to one of her lawyers, Pike was expected to be taken off life support on Tuesday.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, she unexpectedly regained consciousness.

“But on Tuesday, to the shock of everyone, including me, including her team, and including the medical team, Christa woke up and began talking,” the lawyer said.

Asked about Pike’s first words after regaining consciousness, her lawyer said her initial response was reportedly:

“Where am I and who are you?”

The development has raised fresh questions surrounding the failed execution and Pike’s medical condition following the two unsuccessful lethal-injection attempts.

Pike remains under medical care as her lawyers continue to monitor her condition and pursue legal options.
