Former Kano APC Governorship Candidate Gawuna Resigns as FMBN Chairman

Gawuna Resigns as FMBN Chairman Ahead of Planned Political Defection
Nasiru Gawuna, the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), has resigned from his position, signaling a major political move ahead of fresh alignments in Kano politics.
Gawuna, who was the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kano State during the 2023 general election, is said to have concluded arrangements to dump the ruling party and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reportedly under the political influence of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to details contained in his resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, the former FMBN board chairman said his resignation takes immediate effect.
He explained that the decision was made in compliance with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which requires political appointees seeking to participate in electoral or partisan political activities to vacate their offices in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Resignation Linked to Electoral Law Compliance
In the letter, Gawuna stated that stepping down was necessary to ensure full adherence to existing electoral regulations ahead of what appears to be his return to active politics.
“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” he stated.
The development is already being interpreted in political circles as a strategic move that could reshape alignments in Kano State, especially with growing speculation over fresh alliances and defections ahead of future electoral contests.
Gawuna Thanks Tinubu for Opportunity to Serve
Gawuna also used the opportunity to express appreciation to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving on the board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria.
He described his time in office as a privilege and said it gave him the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the institution and national development.
“I am deeply grateful to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve. It has been a privilege to contribute to the growth and development of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the country at large,” he said.
Places Future in Allah’s Hands
In a personal and reflective note, the former Kano deputy governor said he is committing his political future to Allah (SWT) as he prepares for the next phase of his journey.
He noted that he is seeking divine guidance in taking decisions about his future political direction and engagements.
Assures Smooth Transition
Gawuna further assured that he would ensure a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities in line with laid down procedures and official directives.
He said all necessary steps would be taken to guarantee continuity and institutional stability at the bank following his exit.
Political Implications Loom
His resignation is expected to trigger fresh reactions within the APC in Kano and beyond, particularly given his political weight in the state and his reported alignment with Kwankwaso’s camp.
If confirmed, his expected move to the ADC could further intensify political realignments in Kano, a state that remains one of the most influential battlegrounds in northern Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria on who will immediately assume the leadership of the governing board.
