Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has reportedly declared that he will only support a governorship candidate in Rivers State who shows total loyalty and unwavering commitment to his political camp.
Wike made the remark during a meeting with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates from Rivers State at his residence in Abuja, ahead of the party’s national convention.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, the former Rivers State governor made it clear that he would not repeat what he described as past political mistakes in choosing who to support for the state’s top office.
Speaking in a blunt tone, Wike was quoted as saying that anyone seeking his endorsement for the 2027 Rivers governorship election must demonstrate complete allegiance and commitment to his political structure.
“I will not make the mistake again this time. If you want my endorsement, your blood and hands must be committed to us. No half measures,” he reportedly said.
The statement is already generating reactions within political circles, as many interpret it as a direct warning to aspirants hoping to secure his backing in the next governorship race.
Wike, who remains one of the most influential political figures in Rivers State despite serving in the APC-led Federal Government, is still widely regarded as a key power broker whose support could significantly shape the political direction of the state.
Message to 2027 Aspirants
Political analysts believe the former governor’s comments were aimed at both declared and potential aspirants within the PDP and beyond, particularly those already positioning themselves for the Brick House ahead of 2027.
His remarks are also being linked to the lingering political crisis in Rivers State and his widely reported fallout with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a development that has continued to reshape alliances and deepen divisions within the state’s political landscape.
Observers say Wike’s latest declaration signals that loyalty, rather than mere political ambition, may become the major deciding factor for anyone hoping to emerge with his support.
Wike Still Holds Strong Grip on Rivers Politics
Although he now serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike’s influence in Rivers politics remains deeply rooted, with many party stakeholders and political actors still looking to him as a major force in the state.
His endorsement is considered by many to be one of the most strategic political assets ahead of the next governorship election, especially as alignments and realignments continue to unfold in Rivers State.
With the battle for 2027 gradually taking shape, Wike’s statement is likely to further intensify consultations, political maneuvering, and behind-the-scenes negotiations among those seeking to succeed Governor Fubara.
