The latest figures from Nigeria’s National Data Repository (NDR) indicate that approximately 1.70 million people are currently receiving HIV treatment across the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as of June 30, 2026. The data provides a snapshot of the number of patients enrolled on antiretroviral therapy (ART) nationwide and highlights the continued need for sustained HIV prevention, testing and treatment services.
According to the figures, Benue State remains the state with the highest number of people currently receiving HIV treatment, followed by Akwa Ibom and Lagos. These figures reflect the number of individuals enrolled in treatment programmes and should not be interpreted as the prevalence rate of HIV in each state. Higher numbers may also indicate stronger case detection, wider access to testing, and better treatment coverage.

Health experts note that the availability of treatment has significantly improved survival and quality of life for people living with HIV. With consistent use of antiretroviral therapy, many patients achieve viral suppression, allowing them to live healthy lives while greatly reducing the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

However, experts also caution against using the figures to stigmatize any state or community. The numbers represent people already identified and receiving care, which is a positive indicator of access to healthcare services. Public health authorities continue to encourage Nigerians to know their HIV status through regular testing, practice safe behaviours, and seek treatment promptly if diagnosed.

The National Data Repository is Nigeria’s central HIV data platform, bringing together patient-level information from treatment facilities across the country to support disease surveillance, programme monitoring and evidence-based decision-making.
