A lecturer with Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly lodging in a hotel with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker in Ekpoma.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Uwuigbe was reportedly found dead inside the hotel room shortly after spending time with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to information gathered about the incident, the lecturer had checked into the hotel with Jacob and, after their encounter, reportedly asked her to leave the room to get water for him.

Jacob was said to have left the room and returned a short while later, only to find Uwuigbe lying motionless on the bed.

The incident was subsequently reported to the police at about 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Confirming the development, Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the deceased had lodged at the hotel and had engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman before his sudden death.

Ikoedem said Jacob had been sent out to purchase water and discovered the lecturer dead when she returned.

Three persons have reportedly been taken into police custody in connection with the incident. They include Jacob, the hotel owner and the hotel manager.

The police have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death and establish what transpired in the hotel room before his death.

His remains have reportedly been deposited at the mortuary of Oriaifo Memorial Hospital.

Meanwhile, Ambrose Alli University has confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, however, clarified that the incident did not occur on the university campus.

According to him, the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s activities at the hotel were part of his private life, while the woman involved was not a student of the university.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to establish the cause of death and determine whether any offence was committed in connection with the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s final moments remain under investigation.
